Why Are Laws Necessary?

It is difficult to live in a society with many laws. Why are laws necessary? It is because society cannot be maintained without law. How did society become so dangerous that it was difficult to maintain it? It's because of ignorance. When no one teaches good teachings and no one wants to accept good teachings, society becomes governed by laws created by humans. No matter how much freedom is emphasized and many laws are made, it is of no use. If the people of the world are taught ‘conscience, justice, and love,’ no unfortunate thing will ever happen in that society even if there are no laws. In the end, that society will be able to transform into the most beautiful society.

Basic and Essential Ability For Human Life

The most basic and essential ability in human life is ‘the ability to see ‘what exists’ as it is.’ ‘What exists’ refers to all things that exist within oneself, all things around oneself related to oneself, or all things that are not directly related to oneself but exist in the universe.

If we were to express ‘the ability to see ‘what exists’ as it is’ in one word, it would be ‘truth(fact).’ The word truth is used so much, but it is safe to say that very few people actually have the truth.

Socrates knew one thing: he knew nothing. He lived trying to teach people about it, and was killed for the action. -People don't know that they don't know anything. Rather, people live under the illusion that they know too many facts. As can be seen from what happened to Socrates, if humans work hard through proper education to acquire the ability of truth, they will first realize that they do not know anything. They can reach the stage of knowing nothing. This stage is the very first stage on the path to truly gaining ‘the ability (truth) to see things as they are.’

Lao Tzu(老子) said that when people of low level hear the truth(law), they get angry, when people of middle level hear the truth, they are skeptical, and when people of high level hear the truth, they become happy. Lao Tzu was able to say this because he was able to see what exists in the world as it really is. Being able to see what exists in the world as it is is the same as saying that you can distinguish between right and wrong, good and bad, in things in the world. If people work hard through proper education to obtain truth(the ability), they will move beyond the stage of knowing nothing and reach the stage where they can see what exists in the world as it really is. This is the second stage.

After attaining complete enlightenment through liberation, Shakyamuni lived his life to teach the truth to the people of the world. If people who have reached the second stage work hard through proper education, courage and love will rise within them and they will be able to convey what they have seen in the world to other people. If they continue to do these things, they will accumulate virtue(功德) and at the same time, a fire will be created within them and they will be able to burn off the karma they have accumulated. The third stage is to be able to convey the law (the truth of the world) like this.

Almost all people in the world are unaware of their ignorance and are living in their own dreams. The things of the world are not determined by human dreams, but by the laws of cause and effect that exist within the things. The world is becoming increasingly dark and moving toward a period of change due to people living by relying on their dreams.
